Haywood Estate Winery
_________
The history of Haywood Estate Winery begins in 1973 when Peter Haywood searched for land that would produce nothing but exceptional grapes. In a valley just one mile from Sonoma’s historic town square he found what he was looking for - thin, dry soil on sunny well drained hills that would yield a limited quantity of intensely flavored fruit. Haywood named the vineyard "Los Chamizal," Spanish for the hardwood thickets that covered the valley vineyard. Haywood purchased a total of 280 acres of hard ground and spent the next five years clearing and planting the property. Today, production focuses on the grapes grown in Los Chamizal’s unique mountain terroir and emphasis will continue to be on the three estate Zinfandels; Los Chamizal, Rocky Terrace, and Morning Sun. The vineyard’s 42 acres of Zinfandel, grafted with budwood selections from six North Coast vineyards pre-dating prohibition are planted in nine distinct blocks. Soils range from well-drained sandy loams at the lower elevations, to thin fractured basalt soils at the highest elevations. We invite you to try our boldly flavored, single vineyard estate wines that demonstrate elegance and a commitment to small scale winemaking.
